Prostate Issues
Prostate conditions — including benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), prostatitis, and prostate cancer screening — are among the most common health concerns for men over 50. Urinary symptoms, pelvic discomfort, and reduced flow deserve proper assessment to rule out serious causes and identify the most effective treatment.

Types of prostate condition
- Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) — non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate, the most common prostate condition; affects urinary flow and causes lower urinary tract symptoms
- Prostatitis — inflammation of the prostate, which can be bacterial (acute or chronic) or non-bacterial (chronic pelvic pain syndrome); causes pelvic pain, urinary symptoms, and sexual dysfunction
- Prostate cancer — the most common cancer in men in Europe; PSA testing and early assessment are key to detection at a treatable stage
Symptoms
- Frequent urination — particularly at night (nocturia)
- Urgency — a sudden strong need to urinate
- Weak or interrupted urinary stream
- Difficulty starting urination (hesitancy)
- Feeling of incomplete bladder emptying
- Pelvic pain or discomfort — particularly in prostatitis
- Pain or burning during urination or ejaculation in prostatitis
- Blood in the urine or semen — requires urgent assessment
When to see a doctor
See a doctor if you have urinary symptoms affecting your sleep or daily life, pelvic pain, blood in the urine, or if you are over 50 and have not had a PSA discussion. Men with a family history of prostate cancer should discuss PSA testing from age 45. Do not ignore these symptoms — they deserve proper assessment.

Treatment options
For BPH
- Alpha-blockers (tamsulosin) — relax prostate and bladder neck muscles to improve flow
- 5-alpha reductase inhibitors (finasteride) — reduce prostate size over time
- Surgical options — TURP and laser procedures for severe BPH not controlled by medication
For prostatitis
- Antibiotics — for bacterial prostatitis; a prolonged course is often needed
- Alpha-blockers and anti-inflammatories for chronic pelvic pain syndrome
- Physiotherapy — pelvic floor therapy is highly effective for chronic non-bacterial prostatitis
