Diabetes (Type 2)

Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes, occurring when the body does not produce enough insulin or does not use it effectively. With early diagnosis and the right support, Type 2 diabetes can be well controlled and in some cases put into remission.

What is Type 2 diabetes?

In Type 2 diabetes, the body's cells become resistant to the effects of insulin, and the pancreas struggles to produce enough to compensate. This leads to chronically elevated blood glucose levels that, over time, damage blood vessels and nerves throughout the body.

Type 2 diabetes often develops silently over years — many people are diagnosed incidentally through routine blood tests before they notice any symptoms. Up to one third of people with Type 2 diabetes are unaware they have the condition. This makes regular screening especially important.

Symptoms

  • Increased thirst and frequent urination
  • Fatigue and low energy, particularly after meals
  • Blurred vision
  • Slow-healing cuts or infections
  • Tingling or numbness in hands or feet
  • Unexplained weight changes
  • Recurrent thrush or urinary infections

Many people with Type 2 diabetes have no symptoms at all — making regular blood glucose screening the only way to detect it in the early stages when intervention is most effective.

Causes & risk factors

  • Excess body weight — particularly central (abdominal) obesity
  • Physical inactivity — regular exercise significantly reduces insulin resistance
  • Unhealthy diet — high in refined carbohydrates, sugar, and processed foods
  • Family history of Type 2 diabetes
  • Age — risk increases significantly after 45
  • Ethnicity — South Asian, African, and Caribbean backgrounds carry higher risk
  • Previous gestational diabetes or PCOS

When to see a doctor

See a doctor for blood glucose screening if you are over 45, overweight, or have any of the risk factors above — even if you have no symptoms. If you have any of the symptoms listed, arrange a blood test promptly. Early treatment prevents or significantly delays complications.

Treatment options

  • Lifestyle changes — weight loss, reduced carbohydrate intake, and regular exercise are the most powerful interventions and can achieve remission in early Type 2 diabetes
  • Metformin — the first-line medication, improves insulin sensitivity and lowers blood glucose safely
  • SGLT2 inhibitors (e.g. empagliflozin) — lower glucose and have additional heart and kidney protective benefits
  • GLP-1 agonists (e.g. semaglutide/Ozempic) — highly effective for glucose control and weight loss
  • Insulin — introduced when other treatments are insufficient to control blood glucose
  • Regular monitoring — HbA1c tests, blood pressure, cholesterol, kidney function, eye, and foot checks
